AWE2026 Trend Watch Ⅱ: Health Takes Center Stage as Smart Home Appliances Move Beyond Convenience

As consumers place greater emphasis on quality of life, health is becoming a significant driving force in the home appliance industry. The organizing committee of Appliance & Electronics World Expo (AWE) has released its latest industry report, AI Powers Everything, Key Technology Trends from AWE2026 (the “Report”), examining the technologies and market shifts driving this transformation.

The Report identifies a clear direction: health is no longer an optional product feature or a value-added selling point. It is becoming integral to everyday living, spanning multiple household scenarios and emerging as a key driver of technological innovation and market growth.

Health Becomes a Core Driver of Industry Innovation

Traditionally, home appliances have focused on convenience and comfort. Today, health is becoming a central consideration in product design across categories and throughout the home. Powered by AI, the Internet of Things (IoT) and advanced materials, appliances are evolving from everyday household tools into proactive partners in promoting and managing family health.

The Report highlights three major shifts.

First, health features are becoming standard. Across refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, televisions, kitchen appliances, cleaning devices and personal care products, health-related capabilities are moving from optional extras to essential product features. Basic functions such as sterilization, purification and monitoring are being complemented by more advanced capabilities, including food and fabric recognition, freshness and soil-level analysis, and personalized recommendations for recipes and wash cycles.

Second, health services are becoming proactive. Data collected by connected devices—from indoor air quality and temperature to food inventory and household health indicators—provide the foundation for household health management. With AI and IoT, appliances are moving beyond simply responding to commands toward anticipating needs, offering tailored recommendations and providing more personalized health support.

Third, health solutions are becoming scenario-based. Health needs span every aspect of daily life, and individual devices alone cannot always address them comprehensively. Integrated solutions are gaining momentum. Sleep, for example, depends not only on smart beds and bedding, but also on coordinated climate control, humidification, air purification, lighting, smart curtains and audio devices that create a more restful environment.

Nine Scenarios Redefining Healthy Living

Drawing on the latest technologies showcased at AWE2026, the Report identifies nine key health scenarios: healthy air, laundry care, water, the kitchen, cleaning, age-friendly living and eldercare, sleep, entertainment and fitness, and beauty and personal care. Together, these scenarios illustrate how health-focused innovation is extending across the home, creating a more integrated vision of healthy living.

Healthy air is emerging as a major growth and innovation area for the appliance industry. At AWE2026, multiple companies showcased integrated whole-home solutions powered by smart technologies and designed to support respiratory health. The Report highlights three trends: air systems are evolving from user-controlled devices into intelligent systems that sense environmental conditions, anticipate needs and manage air quality proactively; product boundaries are blurring as integrated solutions become a key competitive differentiator; and demand is shifting toward more precise, personalized solutions tailored to different users and settings.

Laundry is evolving beyond stain removal and basic cleaning to become an integral part of household health management. As consumer expectations become more sophisticated, manufacturers are combining multiple technologies, expanding specialized washing solutions and integrating washing, drying and fabric care. The result is a more comprehensive approach to clothing care that is redefining the standards of healthy laundry.

The focus of home water solutions is shifting from basic safety to water quality and health benefits. Electric and gas water heaters, water purifiers and related products are advancing in areas such as purification, antimicrobial performance and skin-friendly bathing. Together, these innovations are helping build a more comprehensive approach to healthy water use throughout the home.

The kitchen is evolving from a functional cooking space into a more personalized environment that brings together health, convenience and design. According to the Report, the kitchen health ecosystem spans four areas: food storage, cooking and meal preparation, the cooking environment, and cleaning. AWE2026 showcased the shift from individual health-oriented features toward integrated solutions that support healthier choices throughout the entire food journey—from storage and preparation to cooking and cleanup. The broader direction is clear: kitchens are moving beyond ensuring food safety toward more proactive health management.

Healthy cleaning solutions are advancing in three directions: deeper cleaning, continuous cleaning and broader whole-home coverage. Floor washers, robot vacuums, vacuum cleaners, mite-removal devices, upholstery cleaners and window-cleaning robots are expanding the range of surfaces and spaces that can be cleaned. From floors and walls to fabrics and hard-to-reach crevices, manufacturers are building increasingly comprehensive product portfolios. The shift from simply cleaning well to cleaning more thoroughly is driving both product innovation and category expansion.

Age-friendly technology and eldercare emerged as a prominent focus at AWE2026, with a growing range of products and real-world applications pointing to a new phase of broader adoption. The Report identifies three key trends: AI is making products more responsive to older adults' needs; age-friendly home upgrades are emerging as a growth area within the silver economy; and technologies such as robotics and exoskeletons are beginning to find wider applications in eldercare and assisted living. Together, these developments point toward more accessible, intelligent and supportive living environments for an aging population.

Sleep has rapidly emerged as another major battleground for smart home innovation, joining the living room and kitchen as a key connected-living environment. With sleep difficulties affecting a substantial share of adults, consumer expectations are moving beyond simply falling asleep toward better-quality, deeper and more restorative rest. Advances in AI, millimeter-wave radar and IoT connectivity are helping translate the concept of smart sleep into practical solutions. The next stage is focused on seamless coordination among multiple devices and increasingly personalized experiences tailored to individual sleep patterns and needs.

Health-conscious innovation is also reshaping how people relax, exercise and stay connected. In home entertainment, smart displays are being adapted to different user groups, including children and older adults, through more tailored content and services that support both enjoyment and well-being. In fitness, smartwatches, AI-powered glasses and wireless earbuds are becoming important tools for connected exercise. These devices are helping create a more complete cycle of health and fitness management, from monitoring and analysis to feedback and ongoing optimization.

Beauty and personal care is another essential part of the nine-scenario framework. The Report identifies health as a fundamental design principle for this category, rather than an additional selling point. It is increasingly shaping product development, feature selection, material choices and the overall user experience, reflecting consumers' growing interest in personal well-being alongside appearance and convenience.

Health: A Strategic Opportunity for the Next Wave of Growth

AWE2026 highlights a broader industry shift: health is becoming both a key pathway for home appliance innovation and a strategic opportunity for companies looking to expand beyond traditional product categories.

The next wave of development could bring even closer integration of biosensing technologies, advanced AI models and health-related data. Home appliances may increasingly serve as an accessible first layer of household health management, extending their role beyond everyday tasks. For example, a connected kitchen could one day support dietary management for people with chronic conditions by combining personal health indicators with relevant medical data to recommend meals tailored to changing needs, including blood glucose and lipid levels.

For the industry, this transformation presents both opportunity and challenge. Manufacturers will need to continue advancing their product technologies while building capabilities that connect home appliances with healthcare, eldercare and other complementary services. Ultimately, the companies best positioned to lead the next phase of growth will be those that go beyond selling individual products to deliver connected ecosystems that understand users' needs and provide meaningful, proactive health benefits. As AWE2026 demonstrates, the future of home appliances is not just about making life easier. It is about making everyday living healthier.
